Nothing is landing
I’ve been sitting with discomfort recently...
You know that feeling when one thing has ended, but the next thing hasn’t quite started yet? It’s like a weird liminal space where you’re not who you were, but you’re not yet who you’re becoming?
That.
My Sufi teacher, Johnny, used to say the, ‘ego hates this space.’ It wants a plan. It wants to know. It wants to nail down the next five years so it can relax and stop freaking out about the uncertainty of being alive, living in a body, paying bills, and all this human stuff.
But life doesn’t work that way, does it? And honestly, I’m thankful for that.
I notice that when I stop trying to figure it all out and just let myself be in the mess of my transition, something shifts. Not in some mystical, everything-happens-for-a-reason way, but more that I can finally stop fighting what is, and suddenly I can actually see what’s here. In that, I can be at peace… even if just for a little while.
The breath does this every cycle. There’s that moment at both the top of the inhale and the bottom of the exhale where nothing is happening. It’s silent and still. We’re not breathing in or out. We’re just... suspended. Most of us miss this brief pause, but when you are actually with it, it’s serene.
Maybe try it now? I’ll wait here..
Most people rush through this transitional period, anxious to get back to “the doing.” But if you can hang out there for even a second, you realize: this is it. This is the whole thing. Right here in the pause - of life, of breath, of work, of relationship.
I’m not going to pretend I have mastered this. I’m in the middle of schedule changes, upcoming travel, launching new offerings, trying to find new and meaningful work, and half the time I’m admittedly just white-knuckling it, trying to make everything work out.
But then I remember: there’s nothing to land. There’s just this. And this. And this. And it will all be okay.
So if you’re also in some kind of liminal space yourself—between jobs, relationships, versions of yourself that don’t quite feel right anymore…maybe we can just be in it together without freaking out. Not trying to fix it or transcend it or even manifest our way out of it, but instead trying to practice patience, trust, and okayness.
Just... here. Breathing. Beginning again. Making peace with this moment, to make space for the next.
